Staging for the Pope’s visit to Matera
Filosofia del progetto

The Pope's visit to Matera was unquestionably a major event. The stage for the Mass and the official speeches was to be set up in the largest open urban space (these areas are not always the most beautiful and resonant with meaning). The focus needed to be on the stage, which had to represent both sacredness and majesty.

The idea was to build a vault over the altar, decorated like a fresco. This concept, together with the decision to entrust the realization phase to the skilled papier-mâché craftsmen who make the Madonna della Bruna float for the two-hundred-year-old religious event held every 2 July, proved a winning combination.
